Chelsea’s Daniel Sturridge Hoping For World Cup Call

Chelsea’s new signing Daniel Sturridge has admitted he is hoping he can impress enough this season to earn himself a trip to next summer’s World Cup in South Africa.

The young forward has swapped Manchester City for Chelsea and hopes to follow in Theo Walcott’s footsteps by earning himself a shock call up into the England squad.

A 17-year-old Walcott was surprisingly included in England’s squad for the last World Cup and Sturridge admitted that had given him hope he could be heading to South Africa next summer.

"I have a lot of respect for Theo and, hopefully, if I do well enough I can get myself involved,” he told the Sunday People.

“If I don't make the next World Cup, then I will try to make sure I'm there for the next one and the one after that.

“I would love to help my country win it.”

However, first of all Sturridge must force his way into the first team at Stamford Bridge and with Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka ahead of him in the pecking order that may prove a tough ask.

Yet the youngster is not daunted by the task that faces him and insisted he would learn a lot in west London saying, “The reason I came to Chelsea is to learn off Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka.”
